Kagoshima Essentials

Kagoshima is dominated by Sakurajima, one of the world's most active volcanoes situated across Kinko Bay. The city served as the seat of the powerful Shimazu clan, whose legacy remains at the Sengan-en garden and the ruins of Kagoshima Castle. As a gateway for Western influence, the area played a crucial role in Japan’s Meiji Restoration, history now preserved at the Reimeikan museum. Visitors can access the volcanic peninsula via a 24-hour ferry or explore the hillside Hirakawa Zoo which offers views of the smoking peak.

Museums & History

Kagoshima’s history is defined by the influential Shimazu clan and the legacy of Saigo Takamori, a key figure in the Meiji Restoration. This collection includes Sengan-en, a 17th-century landscape garden and villa, and the Reimeikan, situated on the former site of Kagoshima Castle. Monuments and museums dedicated to Saigo Takamori trace his life from his rise as a samurai leader to his final moments during the Satsuma Rebellion. The Nagashima Museum adds a cultural dimension with its collection of Satsuma ware and regional art.

Kagoshima’s green spaces range from historic architectural sites to volcanic landscapes. Ishibashi Park preserves Edo-period masonry, while Sakurajima Dinosaur Park features life-sized prehistoric models against the backdrop of an active volcano. Extensive municipal grounds like Kinkouwan Park offer panoramic views of Kinko Bay and an H-II rocket model.
