Spiritual Sites of Kagoshima

Kagoshima’s spiritual landscape is deeply intertwined with the legacy of the Shimazu clan and the region's samurai history. This collection features Kirishima-Jingū, a major shrine linked to Japan's creation myths, alongside sites like Nanshu Shrine, which honors Meiji Restoration figure Saigo Takamori. From the ancient Yabusame archery traditions at Shijukusho Shrine to the moral teachings preserved at Takeda Shrine, these landmarks provide a concrete look into the religious customs and historical turning points of southern Kyushu.

Kirishima Shrine

Kirishima-Jingū is a Shinto shrine located in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.

南洲神社

Dedicated to Saigo Takamori, a pivotal figure in the Meiji Restoration. The shrine is located next to the Nanshu Cemetery, the final resting place for over 2,000 soldiers who died during the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion.

Matsubara-jinja Shrine

A Shinto shrine in Kagoshima City dedicated to Shimazu Takahisa, the 15th head of the Shimazu clan. It was established on the former site of Nanretsu-an temple.

Shijukusho Shrine

Located in Kimotsuki, this shrine is known for its annual Yabusame (horseback archery) festival held every October, a tradition that has continued for over 900 years.

Gokoku Shrine

A shrine dedicated to the spirits of individuals from Kagoshima Prefecture who died in conflicts dating from the Meiji Restoration through World War II.

竹田神社

Dedicated to Shimazu Tadayoshi, a prominent lord and educator. The shrine grounds feature a path lined with stone monuments inscribed with his Iroha-uta, a series of 47 poems used as moral guides for samurai.
