Historic Forts and Ruins

Keelung's strategic importance as a deep-water harbor is reflected in this collection of 19th and early 20th-century defensive sites. The list features Qing dynasty batteries like Uhrshawan and Shiqiuling alongside Japanese-era fortifications such as Sheliao East Battery. These sites showcase diverse military architecture, including stone gateways, ammunition depots, and subterranean barracks. Beyond their martial history, these hilltop ruins provide panoramic views of the East China Sea and Keelung’s industrial port.

Uhrshawan Battery

Gongzi Liao Fort

She liao dong pao tai

Located on Heping Island, this Japanese-era battery was part of a coastal defense system. The site contains stone ruins of barracks and ammunition depots and is currently designated as a municipal monument.

Shi qiu ling pao tai

A late Qing dynasty battery situated at a strategic mountain pass. It served as a critical defensive position during the 1884 Sino-French War and retains its original stone masonry and command structures.

Ji long shen she yi zhi

The site of a 1912 Shinto shrine originally dedicated to Prince Yoshihisa. While the main structures were replaced by the Keelung Martyrs' Shrine, original stone lanterns and foundation elements from the Japanese period remain.
