Heritage Sites in Lærdal

Lærdal showcases a diverse collection of Norwegian architectural history. The centerpiece is the 12th-century Borgund Stave Church, the best-preserved of its kind, featuring intricate dragon carvings and tiered roofs. In the village of Lærdalsøyri, over 160 protected wooden buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries form a remarkably intact historic district. Lærdalsøyri

Lærdalsøyri is the administrative centre of Lærdal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway.

Borgund kyrkje

Built in 1868, this wooden church stands adjacent to the medieval Borgund Stave Church. It was constructed to serve the parish when the original stave church was retired from regular use for preservation.

Tønjum kyrkje

Completed in 1891, this wooden long church replaced a medieval stave church that previously stood on the site. It serves as the main parish church for the Tønjum area.

Hauge kyrkje

A wooden parish church built in 1869 in Lærdalsøyri. Designed by architect Christian Christie, it features a traditional long church layout and serves the administrative center of the municipality.

Stiftsstøtta

A marble monument at Filefjell erected in 1793. It marks the completion of the King’s Road (Kongevegen), the first post road connecting Oslo and Bergen.
