National Park Rila Essentials

Rila National Park protects the highest mountain range in the Balkans, dominated by the 2,925-meter Musala peak. The park features over 120 glacial lakes, including the iconic Seven Rila Lakes cirque. Hikers can traverse granite ridges to reach landmarks like the Skakavitsa Waterfall, the highest in the Rila Mountains, and stay at strategically located alpine huts such as Malyovitsa and Ribni Ezera. Seven Rila Lakes

A group of seven glacial lakes situated between 2,100 and 2,500 meters above sea level. Each lake is named for its shape or characteristics, including The Tear, The Eye, and The Kidney.

Skakavitsa

Located in the Skakavitsa Reserve, this is the highest waterfall in the Rila Mountains at approximately 70 meters. It is situated at 1,750 meters above sea level.

Malyovitsa Hut

A stone building located in the Malyovitsa valley at 1,960 meters. It serves as a primary base for climbing Malyovitsa Peak and exploring the northwestern Rila range.

Rilski Ezera

A large mountain lodge located at 2,150 meters near the Seven Rila Lakes. It features a capacity of over 200 beds and is accessible via a chairlift from Pionerska hut.

Kostenets Waterfall

A 12-meter waterfall located on the Stara Reka river near the town of Kostenets. It was famously described in the works of Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov.

Ledenoto Ezero

Known as the "Icy Lake" shelter, this high-altitude refuge is situated at 2,709 meters on the shores of the highest glacial lake in the Balkans, just below Musala peak.

Bistriski vodopad

A waterfall located near the village of Bistritsa in the Rila foothills, formed by the descent of the Bistritsa River.

h. Ribni Ezera

A mountain hut situated between the Upper and Lower Fish Lakes at an elevation of 2,230 meters, providing access to central Rila hiking trails.

Musala hut

The oldest mountain hut in Bulgaria, located at 2,389 meters by the shores of the seventh Musala lake. It serves as a primary rest stop on the route to Musala peak.
