Best Overberg Viewpoints

Stretching from Hermanus to the southernmost tip of Africa, these viewpoints overlook the intersection of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The list includes historic maritime markers like the 1848 Cape Agulhas Lighthouse and the Danger Point Lighthouse, which overlooks the HMS Birkenhead wreck site. Coastal vantage points along the Hermanus Cliff Path, such as Sievers Point and Kraal Rock, offer elevated positions for observing Southern Right whales during the breeding season between June and December.

Cape Agulhas Lighthouse

Built in 1848 at the southernmost tip of Africa, this lighthouse houses a museum and features a design inspired by the Pharos of Alexandria.

Gearings Point

A perfect place to take a walk and relax on a beach. It's also a popular spot for whale spotting if you are in the area in a right season.

Hoy's Koppie

An inselberg in Hermanus with circular hiking trails. It contains archaeological sites with evidence of Middle Stone Age inhabitants and provides a 360-degree view of Walker Bay.

Danger Point Lighthouse

An 18-meter octagonal tower commissioned in 1895. It marks the site where the HMS Birkenhead sank in 1852 and offers views across Walker Bay toward Gansbaai.

Meishu Maru

The rusted remains of a Japanese longliner that ran aground in 1982. It is located within the Agulhas National Park, accessible via a coastal walking trail.

Sievers Point

A prominent lookout on the Hermanus Cliff Path. It is a prime location for land-based whale watching due to the deep water close to the rocks.

Kraal Rock

A rocky outcrop along the Hermanus Cliff Path that overlooks a marine protected area, serving as a vantage point for spotting whales and local bird species.

Viewpoint over Greyton

Located on the lower slopes of the Riviersonderend Mountains, this spot provides a panoramic view of the historic village layout and the surrounding valley.

Whale watching

Elevated coastal cliffs in the De Kelders area. The high vantage points provide clear views of Southern Right whales that frequent the shallow waters of Walker Bay.

Quoin Light

A remote, solar-powered lattice tower situated on Quoin Point. It marks a dangerous stretch of coastline known for numerous historical shipwrecks.
