Historic Sites of Portovenere

Portovenere’s historical landscape is defined by its strategic military architecture and ancient Roman roots. This selection features the 12th-century Castello Doria, a Genoese stronghold overlooking the Gulf of Poets, alongside the 19th-century island fortifications of Forte Umberto I and Forte Cavour on Palmaria. The list also includes the 13th-century Gothic Church of San Pietro, built atop an ancient Roman temple, and the Varignano Roman Villa, which preserves archaeological remains of a maritime residence and olive oil production site.
