Évora District Highlights

The Évora District showcases Alentejo’s architectural evolution, from the 6,000-year-old megalithic stones of Almendres Cromlech to the 110-meter marble facade of the Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa. This selection features strategic medieval fortifications like the circular Arraiolos Castle and the ruins of Montemor-o-Novo. It also highlights regional history through the 18th-century marble craftsmanship of the Chafariz de Borba and the historical weight of Paço dos Henriques, where the Treaty of Alcáçovas was signed in 1479.

Almendres Cromlech

The largest megalithic complex in the Iberian Peninsula, consisting of 95 granite monoliths arranged in enclosures dating from the 6th to 3rd millennium BC.

Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa

A 16th-century Renaissance palace featuring a 110-meter facade clad in local marble. It served as the ancestral seat of the House of Braganza.

Castelo de Montemor-o-Novo

Medieval ruins situated within a fortified enclosure. This site is historically significant as the location where Vasco da Gama's plans for the sea route to India were finalized.

Castelo de Arraiolos

Built in the 14th century by King Dinis, this is one of the few circular castles in the world. It provides panoramic views of the surrounding Alentejo plains.

Chafariz de Borba

An 18th-century Baroque fountain constructed from local white marble, featuring intricate sculptures of Neptune and Amphitrite and three distinct water basins.

Castelo de Redondo

A 14th-century fortification featuring a tall keep and two original medieval gates, Porta do Sol and Porta da Ravessa, which remain integrated into the town's layout.

Pelourinho de Monsaraz

An 18th-century stone pillory located in the main square of the medieval village of Monsaraz, reconstructed following the 1755 earthquake.

Paço dos Henriques

A 14th-century palace in Alcáçovas, famous as the site where the Treaty of Alcáçovas was signed in 1479 to settle territorial disputes between Portugal and Castile.
