St. Anton am Arlberg is a famous ski village in western Tyrol. It is the birthplace of modern alpine skiing and sits at the heart of the Arlberg ski area, one of the largest linked ski areas in Austria. The village is known for challenging terrain, off-piste skiing and a lively après-ski scene.

In summer it turns quiet and green, with hiking and mountain biking on the same slopes.

Lech is a high-end ski village linked by lifts, about 20 minutes by bus.
Landeck is a town in the Inn valley, about 25 minutes by train.
Ischgl is a major ski resort, about 1 hour by car.
Lermoos is a ski area under the Zugspitze, about 1 hour by car.
Innsbruck is about 1 hour 15 minutes by train.
Bregenz is about 1 hour 15 minutes by car.

By air: Innsbruck Airport is about 1 hour 15 minutes away. Zurich, Munich and Friedrichshafen are also used.
By train: St. Anton has its own station on the Arlberg line. Innsbruck takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, Zurich about 3 hours 30 minutes. Check times on ÖBB.
By car: The Arlberg road tunnel connects Tyrol and Vorarlberg. It is a toll tunnel.

The village is compact, and most hotels are near lifts. Free ski buses run in winter. Trains connect to Landeck and Innsbruck. Gondolas start in the village centre.

自驾指南

A car is not needed in winter and parking is limited. Winter tyres or chains are required. The Arlberg tunnel and pass roads can close in heavy snow. Motorways in Austria need a vignette.

Tyrolean mountain food is hearty: Kasspatzln, Tiroler Gröstl and Kaiserschmarrn. Mountain huts serve food on the slopes. The village has a lively dining and bar scene in winter.

Avalanche risk is serious off-piste. Check the avalanche bulletin and use a guide for backcountry skiing. Stay on marked runs otherwise. Tap water is clean and safe to drink. The emergency number is 112. The mountain rescue number is 140.

历史

Skiing in the Arlberg took off in the early 20th century, when Hannes Schneider founded the first ski school here in 1921 and developed the Arlberg technique. The Arlberg railway opened in 1884, and the road tunnel in 1978.
