Santa Margherita Ligure's Absolute Essentials

Santa Margherita Ligure features a collection of 16th-century fortifications, Baroque religious architecture, and historic estates. The town is anchored by the Castello di Santa Margherita Ligure and the hilltop Villa Durazzo, which houses botanical gardens overlooking the harbor. Notable religious sites include the Cervara Abbey on the road to Portofino and the Basilica of Santa Margherita, known for its rose-themed relics. These landmarks document the maritime history and architectural evolution of the Italian Riviera from the Middle Ages through the 19th century.

Historic Religious Sites

Santa Margherita Ligure’s religious landscape features a diverse collection of Baroque basilicas, secluded hillside chapels, and historic abbeys. Key highlights include the 14th-century Cervara Abbey on the coastal road and the ornate Basilica of Santa Margherita. These sites preserve significant artworks, such as the 1499 Flemish triptych in San Lorenzo della Costa and maritime ex-votos in Saint Erasmus, reflecting the town's deep-rooted spiritual history and its strong connection to the sea.
