Historic Squares

Savannah’s historic district is defined by the Oglethorpe Plan, a unique 18th-century urban design featuring a grid of interconnected public squares. These green spaces serve as community hubs, showcasing diverse monuments, live oak canopies draped in Spanish moss, and significant architecture. From the modern social center of Ellis Square to the quiet, residential atmosphere of Chatham Square, each site preserves a distinct chapter of the city's colonial and antebellum history.

Ellis Square

A vibrant social hub rebuilt in 2010, featuring a dancing fountain, life-sized chess sets, and a bronze statue of songwriter Johnny Mercer. It serves as the gateway to the historic City Market.

Lafayette Square

Features the Semiquincentennial Fountain and is flanked by the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and the Andrew Low House. It commemorates the Marquis de Lafayette's 1825 visit to Savannah.

Monterey Square

Home to the Casimir Pulaski Monument and surrounded by the Mercer-Williams House and Temple Mickve Israel. It is widely noted for its dense canopy and Gothic Revival architecture.

Franklin Square

Contains the Haitian Monument honoring the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue. It is situated near City Market and the First African Baptist Church, one of the oldest African American congregations in the United States.

Chatham Square

A quiet residential square named for William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham. It is bordered by the Gordon Row, a notable example of mid-19th-century Federal-style townhouses.

Madison Square

Features the William Jasper Monument and is bordered by the Gothic Revival Green-Meldrim House. The square marks the location of British fortifications during the 1779 Siege of Savannah.
