Nature & Parks of Shanxi

Shanxi’s landscape is defined by the sacred Buddhist peaks of Wutaishan and the steep cliffs of Mount Heng, the northernmost of China's Five Great Mountains. The province features the dramatic limestone gorges of the Taihang Canyon and the cliffside temples of Mian Shan. Beyond its peaks, the region offers high-altitude alpine lakes in Ningwu, the historic garden architecture of Jinci, and the modern domed greenhouses of the Taiyuan Botanic Park.

Mian shan feng jing qu

The birthplace of the Cold Food Festival, this area features Taoist and Buddhist temples built into vertical cliffs, including the hanging Sky Bridge and the ancient Yunfeng Temple.

Mount Cangyan Scenic Area

Renowned for the Bridge-Tower Hall, a stone structure suspended across a gorge between two vertical cliffs. The site served as a filming location for the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Taihang Canyon National Forest Park

This protected area in the Taihang Mountains contains deep limestone gorges and the Baquan Gorge. It is characterized by dramatic karst topography, vertical cliffs, and seasonal waterfalls.

Jin ci feng jing qu

A historic temple and garden complex dating to the Zhou Dynasty. It contains the Saint Mother Hall, built in 1023, and the ancient Nanlao Spring.

Taiyuan Botanic Park

A modern botanical facility featuring three large timber-lattice domed greenhouses. The park houses a diverse collection of global flora and a large central lake.

Tian chi

A natural alpine lake situated at 1,954 meters in the Luya Mountain range. It is one of the few high-altitude lakes in North China.

A large-scale urban ecological park stretching along the Fen River, featuring landscaped gardens, sports facilities, and cultural monuments.

Qian fu dong

A Buddhist grotto site featuring historic stone carvings and statues, located in the vicinity of the Wutaishan mountain range.

Lei ma ya
