Cultural Heritage

Shymkent’s cultural landscape spans centuries, from the 2nd-century BCE archaeological layers of the Citadel to modern monuments honoring national heroes. This selection highlights the city’s spiritual architecture, including the grand Central Mosque and the historic St. Demetrius Church. It also features tributes to legendary figures like Baidibek bi and WWII heroes Aliya Moldagulova and Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, alongside the sacred Koshkar-Ata mausoleum located near the river spring.

Baidibek bi monument

This 19-meter-tall statue stands on the city's highest point, honoring the 14th-century legendary figure who united Kazakh tribes. It is one of the tallest monuments in Kazakhstan.

Hilfort of Shymkent

An ancient archaeological site representing the historic core of the city. Excavations reveal layers dating back to the 2nd century BCE, featuring remains of defensive walls and residential structures.

Мавзолей Кошкар-Ата

A mausoleum dedicated to the legendary 12th-century Sufi sage and healer, situated near the source of the Koshkar-Ata River. The site serves as a local place of pilgrimage.

Centralnaa mecet Uzno-Kazahstanskoj oblasti

Also known as the Akmeshit, this grand mosque features a large white dome and four minarets. It serves as the primary Islamic center for the region.

Qajymuqan Munaitpasuly, also known as Hadjimukan Munaytpasov, was a Kazakh wrestler and repeated World Champion in Greco-Roman wrestling.

A monument dedicated to the Soviet sniper of Kazakh origin who was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for her service during World War II.

Bauyrzhan Momyshuly

A monument honoring the Kazakh military officer and writer who played a significant role in the defense of Moscow during World War II.

Hram Dimitria Solunskogo

An Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, serving the local Christian community with traditional Russian Orthodox architecture.
