Fortified Granaries & Citadels

The Souss-Massa region is home to the world's oldest banking system: the 'agadir.' These fortified communal granaries were built by Berber (Amazigh) tribes to protect grain, oil, and valuables from raids and famine. Often perched on defensive ridges, these stone and earthen structures feature intricate wooden locks, multi-story storage cells, and were governed by strict customary laws. This list highlights the best-preserved examples in the Anti-Atlas mountains, alongside the historic ramparts of Taroudant.

Agadir Imchguiguilne

One of the oldest restored granaries in the region, featuring over 130 storage cells arranged around a central courtyard. This 13th-century site includes a communal assembly room where tribal elders once met.

Agadir أكادير;Agadir Tasguent

A massive, well-preserved granary spanning several floors. It is notable for its size and the presence of a traditional guardian who maintains the hundreds of storage compartments and their carved wooden doors.

An 11th-century fortified granary perched on a rocky ridge. It is characterized by its defensive dry-stone walls and strategic vantage point overlooking the surrounding valleys.
