Ancient Ruins & Fortresses
Sri Lanka’s historical landscape spans over two millennia, featuring UNESCO World Heritage sites and colonial-era coastal defenses. This collection includes the 5th-century rock citadel of Sigiriya and the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa. It also highlights 16th and 17th-century fortifications built by Portuguese and Dutch colonizers in Galle, Jaffna, and Trincomalee. From the massive Mahayana rock carvings at Buduruwagala to the cave monasteries of Vessagiriya, these sites showcase the island's diverse architectural evolution and strategic maritime history.
Vessagiriya
An ancient forest monastery complex dating to the 3rd century BC. The site contains over twenty rock-cut cave dwellings used by Buddhist monks, featuring early Brahmi inscriptions and remains of brick structures set among large boulders.
Pidurangala
A massive rock formation adjacent to Sigiriya, housing a 5th-century cave monastery complex. It features a large reclining Buddha statue made of brick and clay, and serves as a significant archaeological site from the reign of King Kassapa.
