Suriname Essentials

Suriname’s landscape features Dutch colonial history and dense Amazonian rainforest. Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam

Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam is a fort in Suriname built from 1734 to 1747 at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers.

Julianatop

Julianatop is the highest mountain in Suriname at 1,280 metres. It is located in the Sipaliwini District.

Goslar

Goslar is a German turbine steamboat, and was in service as a freighter. She was built in 1929 in Hamburg.

Mariënburg Suikerfabriek

Former sugar plantation and factory established in 1745. The site now serves as a museum documenting the history of indentured labor and the industrial sugar production process in Suriname.

Paramaribo Zoo

The Paramaribo Zoo is the only zoo in Suriname. The zoo opened in May 1972, and was an initiative of prime-minister Jopie Pengel.

WakaPasi

A pedestrian boulevard and craft market located in Paramaribo’s historic center. It features open-air stalls selling local handicrafts, traditional snacks, and artisanal products.

Centrale Markt

The largest indoor market in Paramaribo, located along the Suriname River. It features a diverse range of fresh produce, spices, and a dedicated section for traditional Maroon herbal medicine.
