Taupo Wilderness Huts

This collection features a diverse range of backcountry shelters across the central North Island volcanic plateau and surrounding forest parks. It includes historic sites like the 1904 Old Waihohonu Hut, modern serviced facilities on the Tongariro Northern Circuit, and remote outposts in the Kaimanawa and Pureora Forest Parks. These huts provide essential access to varied landscapes, from the alpine deserts of Mount Ruapehu to the ancient podocarp forests of the Waihaha River valley.

Waihohonu Hut

A modern 28-bunk serviced hut on the Tongariro Northern Circuit, positioned near the junction of the Waihohonu and Ohinepango streams.

Old Waihohonu Hut

Built in 1904, this historic building is the oldest mountain hut in Tongariro National Park and now serves as a museum.

Oturere Hut

A serviced alpine hut located on the edge of the Oturere lava flows, offering views of Mount Ngauruhoe and the jagged volcanic landscape.

Rangipo Hut

Situated on the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, this hut overlooks the Rangipo Desert and provides access to the Round the Mountain Track.

Ketetahi Shelter

Formerly a full hut, this site was converted to a day shelter after sustaining damage during the 2012 eruption of the Te Maari craters.

Ruapehu Ski Club Lodge

Private alpine accommodation located at Whakapapa Skifield on the northern slopes of Mount Ruapehu.

Rangitikei Hut

A remote backcountry hut located in the Kaimanawa Forest Park, frequently used by hunters and trampers exploring the Rangitikei River headwaters.

Cascade Hut

A standard 6-bunk hut in Kaimanawa Forest Park, situated near the Hinemaiaia River and the Cascade Stream.

Waihaha Hut

A modern 10-bunk hut located in Pureora Forest Park along the Waihaha River, accessible via the Waihaha River Road or the Great Lake Trail.

Bog Inn Hut

A historic research hut built in 1960 in the Pureora Forest Park, featuring a unique design adapted for the surrounding wetland environment.

Oamaru Hut

A 12-bunk serviced hut in the Kaimanawa Forest Park, located at the confluence of the Oamaru and Mohaka Rivers.
