Iceland's Natural Wonders

Located within and around Þingvellir National Park, these sites showcase the geological meeting point of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The collection includes the Almannagjá rift valley, the Öxarárfoss waterfall, and volcanic features such as the Gjábakkahellir lava cave and Tintron pseudocrater. Surrounding these landmarks are the prominent peaks of the Botnssúlur range and the subglacial volcano Ármannsfell, offering diverse examples of Iceland’s rifting and volcanic activity.

Öxarárfoss

Öxarárfoss is a waterfall in Þingvellir National Park, Iceland. It flows from the river Öxará over the Almannagjá.

Almannagjá

A massive tectonic rift marking the eastern boundary of the North American plate. It forms a deep gorge where the historic Alþingi assembly met.

Gjábakkahellir

A 364-meter-long lava tube cave formed during an eruption approximately 9,000 years ago, located in the Gjábakkahraun lava field.

A rare lava chimney and pseudocrater located within the Gjábakkahraun lava field, formed by volcanic gases escaping through molten lava.
