Religious Heritage

This collection showcases the diverse religious architecture of Vieira do Minho, ranging from the prominent Basílica de São Bento da Porta Aberta, one of Portugal's major pilgrimage sites, to the unique Capela de Nossa Senhora da Lapa, built directly into a granite boulder. The list includes the ancient Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Abadia, known for its 18th-century Baroque features, alongside several traditional parish churches and mountain chapels that reflect the region's stone masonry and spiritual history.

Basílica de São Bento da Porta Aberta

A major pilgrimage center established in 1615. The current basilica features extensive azulejo tile panels illustrating the life of Saint Benedict and offers views overlooking the Cávado River.

Capela de Nossa Senhora da Lapa

A unique 17th-century chapel constructed inside a massive granite rock formation on the slopes of Monte do Souto. It serves as the site of a traditional annual pilgrimage in July.

Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Abadia
