Religious Sites

Batumi’s religious landscape reflects its history as a multicultural port city on the Black Sea. The Holy Mother Virgin Nativity Cathedral stands out with its neo-Gothic architecture and white stone construction, while St. Nikoloz Church dates back to the 19th-century Ottoman period. The Orta Jame mosque features vibrant interior wood carvings, complemented by the modern Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit and the historic Armenian Apostolic Church, highlighting the city's diverse spiritual heritage.

Church of the Holy Spirit

The Church of the Holy Spirit is a Roman Catholic church in the Black Sea city of Batumi, Georgia’s autonomous republic of Adjara.

Armenian Church

Also known as the Church of the Holy Savior, this Armenian Apostolic temple was built between 1885 and 1887. Designed by architect Robert Marfeld, the building served as a planetarium during the Soviet era before being restored to the Armenian community.

Batumi Cathedral

Originally constructed as a Roman Catholic church between 1897 and 1902, this neo-Gothic cathedral was built using white stone that changes hue in different weather. It currently serves as the primary Georgian Orthodox cathedral in Batumi.

St. Nikoloz Church

Built in the 1860s during Ottoman rule, this is one of Batumi's oldest standing churches. It was established by the local Greek community and features traditional Byzantine-influenced architecture.

Jame

Known as the Orta Jame, this mosque was commissioned in 1886. It is the only surviving historic mosque in central Batumi, notable for its white minaret and the colorful hand-painted floral motifs decorating its interior wooden ceilings.
