Historic Castles and Heritage
Ingolstadt’s historic core is defined by its strategic military and academic past. This collection features the 15th-century New Castle and the 13th-century Herzogskasten, also known as the Old Castle. The city’s defensive legacy is visible at the Reduit Tilly fortress and the iconic 1385 Kreuztor gateway. Religious and educational landmarks include the Late Gothic Liebfrauenmünster, the Baroque St. Maria de Victoria church designed by the Asam brothers, and the 15th-century Hohe Schule, the original site of Bavaria’s first university.
A New Castle
The New Castle in Ingolstadt is one of the most important Gothic secular buildings of the 15th Century in Bavaria.
B Herzogskasten
Also known as the Old Castle, this 13th-century Gothic secular building served as the residence of the Dukes of Bavaria-Ingolstadt.
C Reduit Tilly
A core component of the 19th-century Bavarian state fortress, this classicist defensive structure now houses the Bavarian Army Museum's World War I department.
D Kreuztor
The Kreuztor, built in 1385, is the western gateway to the medieval city center of Ingolstadt.
E Liebfrauenmünster
A late 15th-century Gothic hall church featuring a prominent high altar and intricate stained glass. It is one of the largest churches of its period in Bavaria.
F Taschenturm
A secondary gate tower integrated into the medieval city wall, serving as a defensive structure and later as a prison.
G Hohe Schule
Built in 1434, this 15th-century secular building served as the first seat of the University of Ingolstadt, Bavaria's oldest university.
H St. Maria de Victoria
Also known as the Asamkirche, this Baroque masterpiece by the Asam brothers features a massive flat-ceiling fresco and ornate rococo interiors.
