Kagoshima Essentials

Kagoshima is dominated by Sakurajima, one of the world's most active volcanoes situated across Kinko Bay. The city served as the seat of the powerful Shimazu clan, whose legacy remains at the Sengan-en garden and the ruins of Kagoshima Castle. As a gateway for Western influence, the area played a crucial role in Japan’s Meiji Restoration, history now preserved at the Reimeikan museum. Visitors can access the volcanic peninsula via a 24-hour ferry or explore the hillside Hirakawa Zoo which offers views of the smoking peak.

Sakurajima Ferry

Dedicated to the 'Last Samurai' Saigo Takamori, this Shinto shrine sits adjacent to the Nanshu Cemetery. The grounds contain the graves of over 2,000 soldiers who fought in the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion against the Meiji government.
