Marvão

Megalithic Monuments

The Marvão region contains a dense concentration of Neolithic and Chalcolithic monuments dating between the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE. This collection includes well-preserved granite dolmens, known locally as antas, and solitary standing stones called menhirs. These structures served as collective burial chambers and ceremonial markers. Most sites are accessible via rural paths and provide direct evidence of the funerary practices and territorial organization of prehistoric Iberian communities in the Alto Alentejo.

Anta da Casa dos Galhardos

A megalithic tomb located southwest of Portagem featuring a large polygonal chamber and remains of a corridor, characteristic of regional Neolithic funerary architecture.

Anta da Granja

A Neolithic burial chamber constructed from granite slabs, forming part of the extensive megalithic group surrounding the Marvão territory.

Menir do Corregedor

A solitary granite standing stone reaching approximately 3.5 meters in height, serving as a prominent prehistoric ceremonial marker in the landscape.

Menir de Água de Cuba

A phallic-shaped granite menhir standing nearly 4 meters tall. It dates back to the Neo-Chalcolithic period and is one of the largest in the municipality.

Menir dos Pombais

An upright granite standing stone that represents the prehistoric territorial or religious marking typical of the regional 4th millennium BCE culture.

Anta do Pincho

A megalithic burial structure featuring granite orthostats, situated within the network of prehistoric tombs near the Portuguese-Spanish border.
