Monterosso al Mare Must-Sees

Monterosso al Mare, the largest village of the Cinque Terre, is divided into a modern district and a historic center. Key highlights include the 14th-century Gothic Church of San Giovanni Battista and the Church of San Francesco, which houses a Crucifixion painting attributed to Van Dyck. The coastline features the extensive Fegina beach and the iconic 14-meter-tall concrete Giant statue. Medieval defensive structures like the Aurora Tower sit atop San Cristoforo hill, while the ruins of the Sant'Antonio del Mesco hermitage offer panoramic views from the coastal hiking trails.

Monterosso Peaks and Trails

Overlooking the Ligurian Sea, these peaks form the rugged backdrop of Monterosso al Mare within the Cinque Terre National Park. The summits are connected by a network of ancient mule tracks and the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre (AV5T) hiking trail. Notable landmarks include the 11th-century Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Soviore situated on the slopes of Monte Soviore. The terrain features Mediterranean macchia, pine forests, and sandstone formations, offering vantage points over the coastline toward Levanto and Vernazza.

Churches of Monterosso

Monterosso al Mare’s religious heritage spans from the 13th-century Gothic-Ligurian architecture of San Giovanni Battista to the 17th-century Capuchin monastery. This collection includes the Oratorio dei Neri, known for its Baroque mourning symbols, and the ancient Santuario di Nostra Signora di Soviore, the oldest sanctuary in Liguria. These sites showcase marble rose windows, historic artworks, and panoramic views from the hills surrounding the Cinque Terre's largest village.
