Souss-Massa Essentials

This collection spans the diverse landscapes of southwestern Morocco, from the 4,167-meter summit of Mount Toubkal to the Atlantic coastline. It features the 16th-century ruins of Agadir Oufellah, the traditional collective apiary of Inzerki—one of the world's oldest—and the fortified granary of Agadir Imchguiguilne. Fortified Granaries & Citadels

The Souss-Massa region is home to the world's oldest banking system: the 'agadir.' These fortified communal granaries were built by Berber (Amazigh) tribes to protect grain, oil, and valuables from raids and famine. Often perched on defensive ridges, these stone and earthen structures feature intricate wooden locks, multi-story storage cells, and were governed by strict customary laws. This list highlights the best-preserved examples in the Anti-Atlas mountains, alongside the historic ramparts of Taroudant.
