Developed in the 13th century as a marketplace, this central square was later reshaped during the 15th and 16th centuries. It measures 115 by 60 meters and features a central pedestrian area known as the crescentone, a raised granite platform installed in 1934.
Significant medieval and Renaissance architecture surrounds the space. Notable buildings include the Palazzo d'Accursio, which serves as the city hall, the Palazzo del Podestà, and the Basilica di San Petronio, which is characterized by its unfinished facade.
Within the Palazzo d'Accursio, the Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower) houses a historic clock mechanism and provides panoramic views. The building also contains the Municipal Art Collections, featuring works from the Middle Ages to the present day. An audio guide accessible via smartphone is available for these sections. The square serves as a venue for major cultural events, including the Cinema Ritrovato film festival and various trade fairs. A tourist information office is also located on-site.
