Grandmaster's Palace

Built between the 16th and 18th centuries, the palace was designed by the architect Girolamo Cassar in the Mannerist style. It officially opened in 1574 and originally served as the residence for the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller. Over the following centuries, the building functioned as the National Palace, the Governor's Palace, and a royal residence.

The palace is currently the seat of the Office of the President of Malta. Despite its role as a government office, specific sections are open to the public as a museum. These accessible areas include the State Rooms and the Armoury, which houses historical collections and provides a glimpse into the past and culture of the islands.

The site is a designated National Monument and is managed by Heritage Malta, an agency overseeing more than 90 landmarks and museums. The agency focuses on the conservation and accessibility of cultural heritage, presenting the palace as a key location for understanding historical developments in the region.
