Wilderness Huts and Shelters

These high-altitude shelters provide essential base points for mountaineers and experienced hikers within Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The collection includes historic structures like the 1917 Sefton Bivvy, the park's oldest hut, alongside modern facilities like the 2003 Mueller Hut. Situated on ridges and glacial plateaus, these huts offer access to the Tasman Glacier and the Caroline Face, serving as critical refuge from unpredictable alpine weather and starting points for technical climbs.

A

Mueller Hut

Located at 1,800 meters on the Sealy Range, this fifth-generation building opened in 2003. It features 28 bunks and provides a vantage point for observing avalanches on Mount Sefton and views across the Hooker Valley.

Hooker Hut

A historic alpine hut first constructed in 1910. It has been relocated multiple times due to glacial retreat and moraine instability, currently serving as a 12-bunk shelter in the Hooker Valley.

Caroline Hut

A private 12-bunk facility situated on the Ball Ridge. It is the only hut providing direct views of the Caroline Face, the highest ice face in the Southern Alps.

Kelman Hut

A high-altitude DOC hut situated at 2,480 meters on the upper Tasman Glacier. It is a primary base for climbers and ski tourers, equipped with solar lighting and radio communications.

Tasman Saddle Hut

Positioned on a rock outcrop above the Tasman Glacier at approximately 2,300 meters. This wilderness shelter is primarily used by mountaineers and ski tourers accessing the upper reaches of the Southern Alps.

Sefton Bivvy

The oldest remaining hut in the national park, constructed in 1917. This small, four-bunk bivouac is located on a rocky spur below Mount Sefton and maintains its original historic character.
