Broumov

Kleinstadt · Bezirk Náchod, 🇨🇿 Tschechien

Broumov is a small town in the far north-east of Bohemia, almost surrounded by the Polish border. It grew up around a large Benedictine monastery, and the monastery still dominates the town today. Its Baroque halls, a copy of the Shroud of Turin and one of the oldest wooden churches in Central Europe make it a strong stop for anyone interested in history and architecture.

The town is also the base for the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area, a region of sandstone rock towns, forested ridges and quiet villages with Baroque churches. It suits a slow trip of two or three nights that mixes one day of culture with long walks in the rocks. The writer Alois Jirásek went to school at the monastery.

Beste Reisezeit

Late spring to early autumn is the best time. Summer is mild and green, which is ideal for hiking in the rocks. Winters are cold and snowy, and some sights keep shorter hours or close outside the main season.

The main season also brings Za poklady Broumovska, a summer series of classical concerts held in the Baroque village churches around Broumov. It is a good reason to plan a summer weekend here.

Top-Sehenswürdigkeiten

Broumov Monastery is the heart of the town. The Baroque complex was rebuilt by the architects Christoph and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer. Guided tours show the grand halls and the refectory with a historic copy of the Shroud of Turin.

Church of St. Adalbert is the monastery church. Its rich Baroque interior has painted ceilings, carved altars and a fine pulpit.

Muzeum Broumovska occupies part of the monastery. It tells the story of the town and the region, from the Middle Ages to the textile era.

Monastery Garden is the restored Baroque garden behind the monastery. It is a quiet place for a break and often hosts exhibitions and events.

Wooden Church of the Virgin Mary stands in the town cemetery, a short walk south of the centre. Built from massive oak beams without nails, it is one of the oldest wooden churches in Central Europe.

Broumov Brewery Museum sits in the brewery in the Olivětín district. The brewery was founded by the Benedictine monks, and the museum shows old brewing tools and machinery.

Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows (Hvězda) crowns the ridge of the Broumov Walls about 5 km west of town. The Baroque chapel has a star-shaped plan and wide views over the Broumov basin and into Poland.

Broumovské stěny is a long sandstone ridge with rock towers, gorges and viewpoints. Marked trails make it an easy half-day walk from the chapel.

Orte zum Entdecken

Broumov is part of a wider area that is worth exploring by car or regional train.

Anreise

  • By air: There is no airport nearby. Wrocław in Poland is about 2 hours away by car. Prague Airport is about 2.5–3 hours by car and longer by public transport.
  • By train: Regional trains link Broumov with Meziměstí, Police nad Metují and Náchod. Change in Náchod or at the junctions beyond it for Hradec Králové and Prague. The whole trip from Prague takes about 3.5–4 hours. The station is a 10-minute walk from the monastery. Plan with České dráhy.
  • By bus: Regional buses connect Broumov with Náchod, Police nad Metují and nearby villages. Direct long-distance buses from Prague are few.

Unterwegs vor Ort

  • On foot: The old town and the monastery are compact. You can reach every in-town sight on foot, including the wooden church.
  • Buses and trains: Regional buses and trains belong to the IREDO system. You can pay with a contactless bank card on board most services. See IREDO.
  • To the rocks: Buses to the rock areas are infrequent, especially at weekends. A car or bike gives much more freedom.
  • Tourist information: Region Broumovsko lists trails, events and opening hours.
  • Cycling: The Broumov basin has quiet roads and marked cycle routes. Expect hills whenever you leave the valley floor.

Autofahren

  • Is a car worth it?: Yes, if you want to see the rocks and villages. Public transport to the trailheads is limited. In town, you do not need a car.
  • Parking: There is parking near the main square and near the monastery. Paid car parks serve the trailheads at Hvězda and the Adršpach rocks.
  • Restrictions: Nothing special applies in town. Some rock areas limit car access and can fill up on summer weekends.

Essen & Trinken

Local food is simple, hearty Czech fare. Look for roast pork with dumplings, game in autumn and fruit dumplings in summer. The local beer is Opat, brewed at the monastery-founded brewery in the Olivětín district, next to Broumov Brewery Museum.

Most places to eat cluster around the main square, Mírové náměstí, and in the streets near the monastery. Village inns near the rocks serve good lunches for hikers.

Sicherheit & Gesundheit

Broumov is a safe, quiet town with little petty crime. The main risks are outdoors. Paths in the rock areas can be steep, narrow and slippery after rain, so wear proper shoes and stay on marked trails. Climbing on the rocks is regulated and allowed only for trained climbers. Ticks are common in the forests from spring to autumn, so check yourself after a hike. Tap water is safe to drink.

Geschichte

In 1213, the Bohemian king gave this remote border area to the Benedictine monks of Břevnov in Prague. They founded Broumov Monastery, and a market town grew around it. In the 1420s, the monks from Prague fled here from the Hussite wars, and the town was besieged but never taken.

In 1618, a quarrel over a Protestant church in Broumov became one of the sparks of the Thirty Years' War. A century later, the Dientzenhofer architects rebuilt the monastery and many village churches in Baroque style. The churches of the Broumov region still show this golden age today.

After 1945, the mostly German-speaking population was expelled. Under Communism, the monks left and the monastery fell into decline. It has since been restored and reopened as a centre for culture and education.
