Highlights of Constanța County

Constanța County preserves layers of history ranging from the Roman victory monument at Tropaeum Traiani to the 16th-century Esmahan Sultan Mosque, the oldest in Romania. The region features the Capidava fortress on the Danube and the 'buried' church of Istria, constructed partially underground during Ottoman rule. Natural landmarks include the Jurassic limestone formations of Cheile Dobrogei, while the Statue of Ovidius in the regional capital marks the exile of the famous Roman poet.

Tropaeum Traiani

The Tropaeum Traiani or Trajan's Trophy lies 1.4 km northeast of the Roman city of Civitas Tropaensium.

Geamia „Esmahan Sultan”

Built in 1575 in Mangalia, this is the oldest mosque in Romania. It was constructed using stone from the ancient city of Callatis and features a cemetery with 300-year-old tombstones.

Situl arheologic „Cetatea Capidava”

A 2nd-century Roman-Byzantine fortress on the Danube, part of the Limes Scythicus. The site includes well-preserved defense walls, towers, and the foundations of ancient basilicas and baths.

Peștera Sfântului Apostol Andrei

A monastery and cave where Saint Andrew is said to have lived and preached during the 1st century. The site serves as a major pilgrimage destination with three chapels.

The Statue of Ovidius

Created by Ettore Ferrari in 1887, this bronze statue in Constanța’s old town commemorates the Roman poet Ovid, who lived here in exile from 8 AD until his death.

Rezervația Naturală Cheile Dobrogei

A geological reserve featuring limestone formations and ancient coral reefs dating to the Jurassic period. The area contains steep canyons and unique steppe vegetation.

Biserica Îngropată "Sfânta Treime"

An 1860s Orthodox church built partially underground to comply with Ottoman laws that restricted the height of non-Muslim religious structures. It is located in the village of Istria.

Monumentul de la Straja

A 50-meter-tall stainless steel monument overlooking the Danube-Black Sea Canal. Built in 1987, it commemorates the completion of the massive canal project.
