Historic Sites of Monfragüe
This collection explores the human history of Monfragüe National Park, spanning from prehistoric times to the mid-20th century. The sites include the Abrigo del Castillo’s schematic cave paintings and the remains of a 9th-century fortress built by the Umayyads. Roman influence is visible at the Cerro Gimio watchtower, which provided strategic views over the Tagus and Tiétar rivers. Later history is represented by traditional rural ruins and the hidden ovens used by post-Civil War Maquis guerrillas in the dense Mediterranean scrubland.
Castillo de Monfragüe
9th-century Arab fortress later held by the Order of Montegaudio. It features a restored tower and a chapel housing the 12th-century Byzantine-style Virgin of Monfragüe.
Pinturas rupestres
Schematic rock art dating to the Copper and Bronze Ages, located in the Abrigo del Castillo. These prehistoric paintings depict human figures and symbolic patterns in red pigment.
Atalaya romana de Cerro Gimio
Remains of a Roman watchtower situated on a strategic ridge. The site provides panoramic views overlooking the confluence of the Tiétar and Tagus rivers.
