Winters are long, dark, and cold, with snow on the ground from around October to May. Summers are short and mild, rarely warm, but bring nonstop daylight. Time a winter trip around the Tromsø International Film Festival in January, held during the darkest weeks of the polar night.

Local menus lean on the sea: fresh cod, king crab, and reindeer are common on Tromsø's menus, alongside everyday Norwegian staples like waffles and cinnamon buns.

For a drink with history, head to Ølhallen, a cellar pub open since 1928 that has served polar explorers, hunters, and fishermen for generations; it still pours dozens of beers from the Mack brewery whose old buildings surround it, even though brewing itself moved out of town in 2012.

Tromsø is a very safe city with little violent crime; petty theft and rowdy weekend nightlife around the bars are the most common issues. The real hazard is weather: icy pavements in winter cause more visitor injuries than crime does, so good winter boots matter. Dress in layers and check conditions before any hike or drive outside the city, since weather changes fast this far north.

Tromsø became a trading town in 1794. Skansen, a small fort on the harbor, predates the town's city charter and is among the oldest structures still standing in Tromsø, though sources disagree on exactly how old it is. Sealers, trappers, and expedition ships made this harbor a regular supply stop before the Arctic ice, earning Tromsø the nickname "Gateway to the Arctic". Roald Amundsen honors the first person to reach the South Pole, in 1911, whose exploits are also chronicled in Tromsø's Polar Museum; he vanished in 1928 while flying north to search for a missing rescue crew.

During the Second World War, Tromsø briefly served as Norway's seat of government after the German invasion in 1940, before the king and cabinet fled into exile. The German battleship German battleship Tirpitz, once among the most feared ships in the Nazi navy, was sunk by British bombers near the city in 1944; wreckage and wartime artifacts are now on display in Tromsø's museums.
