Mountain Huts and Shelters

This collection features essential high-altitude accommodations across the Făgăraș, Bucegi, Piatra Craiului, and Ciucaș ranges of Brașov County. Ranging from historic stone structures like Cabana Postăvaru, founded in 1883, to the Omu Chalet at 2,505 meters, these sites provide basic lodging, meals, and emergency shelter. They serve as strategic hubs for traversing the Transylvanian Alps, offering access to major peaks and technical climbing routes while maintaining traditional mountain hut culture.

Cabana Postăvaru

Founded in 1883, this is the oldest functioning mountain hut in the Romanian Carpathians, situated at 1,604 meters on the Postăvaru Massif.

Cabana Vârful Ciucaș

Located at 1,595 meters in the Ciucaș Mountains, this modernized chalet offers Wi-Fi and serves as a base for exploring the area's distinct conglomerate rock formations.

Cabana Mălăiești

Situated in a glacial valley at 1,720 meters in the Bucegi Mountains, this hut provides access to the Scara Ridge and the northern approach to Omu Peak.

Curmătura hut

A major trail junction in Piatra Craiului National Park at 1,470 meters, providing the primary access point to the Northern Ridge.

Omu Chalet

Standing at 2,505 meters on the highest peak of the Bucegi Mountains, this is the highest permanently inhabited location in Romania, originally built in 1888.

Cabana Podragu

The highest mountain hut in the Făgăraș range, located at 2,136 meters next to Podragu Lake. It is the primary overnight stop for hikers traversing the main ridge.

Refugiul Grind

A metal dome-shaped emergency shelter located at 1,620 meters on the eastern slope of Piatra Craiului, providing basic cover for hikers ascending the Grind Couloir.

Cabana Piatra Mare

Located at 1,630 meters on the Piatra Mare plateau, this hut is accessible via the Seven Ladders Canyon trail and is known for its resident pack donkeys.

Cabana Valea Sâmbetei

Situated at 1,401 meters in the Făgăraș Mountains, this hut is a main starting point for the southern ascent toward Moldoveanu, Romania's highest peak.

Cabana Diham

Located at 1,320 meters, this chalet serves as a year-round crossroads for trails connecting Bușteni, Râșnov, and the Mălăiești Valley.

Cabana Plaiul Foii

A large mountain lodge located at the western base of the Piatra Craiului Mountains, accessible by car from Zărnești via a forest road.

Refugiul Diana

A small, orange metal emergency shelter at 1,510 meters in Piatra Craiului, marking the junction for technical trails like Brâna Caprelor.

Cabana Garofița Pietrei Craiului

Located at 1,100 meters on the western slopes of Piatra Craiului, this former forestry cabin provides access to the Marele Grohotiș limestone scree fields.
