Forts and Castles

Sinhagad Fort

Sinhagad is an ancient hill fortress located at around 49 km southwest of the city of Pune, India.

Torna Fort

Also known as Prachandagad, this was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646. It is one of the highest hill forts in the Pune district, featuring massive fortifications and the Zunjar Machi cliff.

Bhor Rajwada

A 19th-century palace that served as the official residence of the Raja of Bhor. The structure features a blend of European and Indian architectural styles and contains a large central courtyard used for state functions.

Shivneri Fort

A 17th-century military fortification and the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The site features seven monumental gates, a prayer hall, and a small temple dedicated to Goddess Shivai.

Dhakoba Fort

A high-altitude peak in the Junnar region, historically used as a watchtower. It offers views of the Konkan plains and contains several rock-cut water cisterns.

jivdhan fort

A strategic fort that guarded the ancient Naneghat trade route. It features rock-cut steps, several storehouses, and a prominent 600-foot-high pinnacle known as Vanar Lingi.

Hadsar

A hill fort in the Junnar region featuring impressive rock-cut steps, a main gate carved directly into the mountain, and a plateau with several water cisterns and a temple.

Nimgiri Fort

A twin fort located near Junnar that shares its base with Hanumantgad. The site contains several rock-cut water tanks and the ruins of ancient stone structures.

Hanumantgad Fort

A small fort adjacent to Nimgiri Fort, historically used as a military outpost to monitor trade routes and the surrounding valleys of the Sahyadri range.

Durga fort

A hill fort located in the Junnar region, known for its strategic position guarding the ancient Ghatghar trade pass near the Dhakoba peak.

Sindola Fort

A small hill fort dating back to the 5th or 6th century, primarily used as a watchtower to oversee the Malshej Ghat and the Junnar region.

Bhairavgad Fort

A rugged fort featuring a massive rock-cut cave and steep approaches. It served as a strategic outpost overlooking the Konkan region and the Malshej Ghat.

Chawand Fort

Part of the 'Junnar Quintet,' this fort features rock-cut steps and seven water tanks known as Saptamatrika. It was extensively reconstructed during the Maratha period.

Garudmaachi

A high-altitude plateau and outpost located near Tamhini Ghat, historically used to monitor movements between the Konkan coast and the Deccan plateau.

Bhorgiri Fort

A small fort located near the Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary. It contains several caves and water tanks, guarding the historical route from the Konkan to the Deccan.

Lingana Fort

A massive pinnacle fort situated between Raigad and Torna. Built by Shivaji Maharaj in 1648, it was primarily used as a high-security prison due to its difficult access.

Machchhindragad fort

A hill fort located near Gorakhgad, named after the sage Machindranath. It features several rock-cut caves and water cisterns used by travelers and soldiers.

Gorakhgad

A hill fort in the Sahyadri range named after Saint Gorakhnath. It is characterized by steep rock-cut steps and large caves historically used by hermits for meditation.
