Tønsberg nor Essentials

Tønsberg is Norway’s oldest town, established in the 9th century. This collection highlights the medieval ruins of Tunsberghus fortress and the Romanesque Sem kirke, which dates back to 1100. Modern landmarks include the award-winning library built over archaeological excavations and Edvard Munch’s summer cottage in Åsgårdstrand. Tunsberghus

Ruins of a 13th-century medieval fortress, once among the largest in Scandinavia. Situated atop Slottsfjellet hill, the site features remains of a royal residence and defensive walls.

Slottsfjellsmuseet

Displays Viking-age artifacts, including the 9th-century Klåstad ship, alongside exhibits on the region's medieval history, whaling industry, and urban development.

Tønsberg domkirke

A brick Gothic Revival cathedral completed in 1858. It stands on the site of the medieval St. Lavrans Church and contains a 17th-century altarpiece and pulpit.

Munchs hus

The preserved summer cottage of artist Edvard Munch in Åsgårdstrand. The house and studio served as the setting for many of his famous paintings.

Sem kirke

A Romanesque stone church constructed around 1100, making it the oldest building in the municipality. It is located near the historic Jarlsberg estate.
