Historic sites in Visby Cathedral District

Visby is a remarkably preserved medieval trading center on the island of Gotland and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town is defined by its 13th-century limestone ring wall, which stretches nearly 3.5 kilometers and includes numerous defensive towers and gates. This collection features key architectural remains, including the oldest tower in the fortifications, prehistoric stone labyrinths, and gates that once connected the Hanseatic hub to its surrounding hospitals and countryside.

Hanseatic Town of Visby

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994, this exceptionally preserved medieval town features a 3.5-kilometer limestone ring wall, over 200 stone merchant houses, and numerous 12th-century church ruins from the Hanseatic era.

Kruttornet

Built around 1160, this is the oldest tower in the Visby city wall. Originally a free-standing defensive structure protecting the harbor, it later served as a gunpowder store.

Norderport

Dating from approximately 1280, this is one of the oldest and most imposing gates in the city wall, serving as the primary northern entrance to the medieval town.

Galgberget, Visby

Galgberget is a nature reserve just north of Visby on Gotland, Sweden.

Dalmanstornet

A 17-meter high defensive tower built in the 12th century as part of the original fortifications, later modified into a gate during the 14th century.

Trojaborg

A prehistoric stone labyrinth located on the plateau north of the city wall, traditionally associated with ancient rituals or maritime folk magic.

Sankt Göransporten

A 14th-century gate in the northern section of the wall, named after the nearby medieval leper hospital of St. George which stood outside the city defenses.
