Construction of the walkway began around 1905 to serve as a maintenance path for hydroelectric facilities. King Alfonso XIII inaugurated the route in 1921, and it remains a significant example of industrial heritage. The site is situated within the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Park, in close proximity to prehistoric archaeological sites like the Ardales cave.
The path consists of a series of secured footbridges and walkways pinned to the steep walls of a narrow gorge. These structures reach heights of up to 105 meters above the canyon floor. After being closed for a period, the route underwent extensive repairs and officially reopened in 2015.
This one-way hiking trail features a landscape of dramatic cliffs and industrial infrastructure. The path is accessible to the public and showcases the region's engineering history from the 19th and 20th centuries.
