Roman Galleries Rua Prata

This cryptoporticus dates back to the period between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. Originally constructed as an architectural support platform for buildings during the Roman occupation, the structure was later utilized as an underground water reserve. The site was rediscovered beneath the city streets following the earthquake of 1755.

The 2,000-year-old landmark consists of a network of intricate underground channels. As a rare example of Roman engineering, it remains a significant piece of cultural heritage that provides evidence of the ancient urban layout.

Access to the galleries is restricted, as they are typically only opened to the public once a year or for occasional guided visits. These limited openings allow for the exploration of the subterranean ruins.
