The museum is a public foundation that presents the history, regional studies, and natural history of the country. It is housed in a complex consisting of two historic buildings and a modern extension. One of the historic structures, House 15, dates back to 1438 and has previously served as a manorial tavern, a customs station, and the seat of government.
The collection spans from the Stone Age to the present day, organized within 42 exhibition rooms. Exhibits feature historical artifacts, treasures, and displays focused on rural life, nature, and the landscape. The institution also manages additional sites, including the Post Museum, the Treasury, and a rural living museum.
Designated as a Cultural Heritage Site, the museum is open to the public. Facilities on the premises include the Castle Café.
