The bridge is the oldest surviving stone bridge in the city, constructed between 1578 and 1607. It spans the Seine River and connects the Île de la Cité with the rest of the city. Designed by Jean-Baptiste Androuet du Cerceau, the bridge features distinctive arch architecture, pedestrian promenades, balconies, and numerous statues.

Its historical significance is reflected in its role as a cultural landmark, appearing in art and film. The bridge's unique design includes a one-way crossing and decorative sculptures, emphasizing Renaissance architectural influences.

This stone bridge remains an important architectural and historical monument, accessible for public viewing and crossing.
