Commissioned by King Frederick William II and constructed between 1788 and 1791, this sandstone gate is a masterpiece of classicism. Originally built as a symbol of peace, it is the only surviving historical city gate. The structure has served as a backdrop for significant historical events, representing division during the Cold War when it was obstructed by the Berlin Wall, and later becoming a global symbol of German reunification.

The monument was designed by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans and is a prominent example of neoclassical and Greek revival design. It stands 26 meters tall and reflects early classicist architecture in Prussia. Later architectural contributions were made by Heinrich Strack.

As a designated Cultural Heritage Site, the gate stands as a national symbol and a beacon of European unity. The site is an architectural landmark and a major point of interest that is accessible to the public.
