Housed in a historic palace complex covering 210,000 square meters, this museum opened on August 10, 1793. The architectural evolution of the site features contributions from architects such as Pierre Lescot, Claude Perrault, Charles Le Brun, and I. M. Pei. It consistently ranks as the most visited art museum in the world.

The extensive collection spans Western art from the Middle Ages to 1848, alongside significant holdings of ancient civilizations and Islamic art. Notable masterpieces on display include the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Works by artists such as Michelangelo, Rodin, Delacroix, Vermeer, Hieronymus Bosch, Raphael, Rubens, and Albrecht Dürer are part of the permanent exhibitions.

The facility is wheelchair accessible. Access to the galleries is available through reserved entry, which assists in bypassing the long queues common at the site. Guided tours and curated routes provide structured paths through the exhibits. Admission is priced at 32€ for non-citizens or non-residents of the European Economic Area (EEA) and 22€ for citizens or residents of the EEA.
