Established in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, this site served as the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer Empire. The city was rebuilt as a massive historical center and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site is renowned for its central Bayon Temple, which contains hundreds of serene stone faces carved into its towers. The architecture showcases intricate bas-reliefs and sculptural decorations. The city is entered through monumental gates decorated with elaborate carvings depicting gods and giants.
Spanning a vast area, the site demonstrates sophisticated urban planning from the Angkor period. The structures, including well-preserved laterite buildings and intricate stone carvings, have survived for over eight centuries. It remains a primary destination for the study of ancient Khmer history and architecture.
