Established in 1443, this temple serves as the central institution of Cambodian Buddhism and the headquarters of the Maha Nikaya order. It is considered the most important wat in the city and functions as the seat of the patriarch of Cambodian Buddhism. Historically, the complex was the first temple to undergo restoration following the damage sustained during the Khmer Rouge regime.
