Established in 1872, this is the oldest public park in the country and its first public garden. Following the events of 1878, the space was significantly redesigned by architect Antonín Kolář on the initiative of governor Pyotr Alabin. Originally named the Alexander II Garden in honor of Alexander II, the site was reorganized with an updated alley network, new plant species, a wooden fence, a coffeehouse, and a kiosk for musicians.
The park features central fountains and is a recognized site for outdoor chess games. The grounds are positioned in front of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and the former royal palace, surrounded by various cultural and state institutions.
