Built between 1945 and 1946, this national cultural monument serves as a final resting place for 3,364 Soviet soldiers, making it one of the largest Second World War memorial sites in the Czech lands. The site consists of three sections: mass graves for the Red Army, a burial ground for Romanian allied troops, and a section for members of the Czech domestic resistance. A columbarium also preserves the ashes of 283 officers.

The original focal point is a statue of a kneeling Red Army soldier on a tall pedestal by sculptor František Vladimír Foit. Around 1980, for the 35th anniversary of the liberation, the site was redesigned by architects Jiří Mikšík and Zdeněk Denk with sculptor Miloš Axman. This project introduced a 39-metre slanted concrete pylon anchored 12 metres deep on pilings, a broad ascending staircase, and exposed-concrete relief panels depicting soldiers and military equipment.

While heavy military equipment installed during the reconstruction was removed in 1991, the site retains its monumental character. It has held the status of a national cultural monument since 1989 and is open to the public as a significant place of remembrance.
