Founded in the early 14th century, likely around 1325 by Tas von Mrdice, this medieval castle is a protected cultural monument. Originally built in the Gothic style, it underwent significant Renaissance and Baroque reconstructions over the centuries. Historically, the fortress served as a refuge during the Hussite Wars and was held by several noble families, including the Waldsteins and the Berka von Dubá. From approximately 1800, the structure was adapted for residential and economic use, remaining in the possession of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis (a prominent European noble family) until 1945.
After serving various functions, including use as a retirement home, the site reopened to the public in May 2021. It now functions as a venue for cultural life, offering a variety of art exhibitions and hosting seasonal events like summer cinema. The castle complex is characterized by its historical architectural layers and its role as a regional cultural hub.
