Originally constructed as a communal church after 1250, this Gothic brick building is the oldest continuously used parish church. The structure features a three-nave design and reaches a height of 91 meters. While initially Roman Catholic, it has served as a Lutheran Protestant church since 1539.

The building has undergone several stylistic updates, incorporating Baroque and Neo-Gothic elements. Notable architects involved in its modifications throughout history include Andreas Schlüter, Carl Gotthard Langhans, and Hermann Wilhelm Albert Blankenstein. Significant restoration work took place during the late 19th-century Gothic revival period.

Interior highlights include a historic Totentanz fresco (Dance of Death) dating to 1484 and a prominent statue of the reformer Martin Luther. The church also contains the tomb of Otto Christoph von Sparr, a 17th-century military officer. It remains an active place of worship and serves as a venue for cultural events, though the site is not wheelchair accessible.
