This medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. It functions as a museum and is managed as a branch of the National Historical Museum. The architectural structure consists of three distinct sections: the original east wing dating to the late 10th or early 11th century, a central wing added in the 13th century during the Second Bulgarian Empire, and a mid-19th century expansion.
The interior is world-renowned for its remarkably preserved 13th-century frescoes, specifically those completed in 1259. These mural paintings comprise one of the most significant collections of medieval Bulgarian art, depicting 89 scenes with 240 human images. Among the most famous depictions are the portraits of Kaloyan and Desislava.
The site operates with strict capacity limits to preserve the integrity of the artwork. Advance booking is required for organized groups, and annual attendance exceeds 200,000.
