Designed by Austrian architect Friedrich Grünanger and opened in September 1909, this historic temple is the largest Sephardic synagogue in Europe and the third-largest synagogue on the continent. The architecture is a blend of Moorish Revival and Byzantine Revival styles, featuring a large dome and intricate interior details. The building was constructed between 1905 and 1909 and has a maximum capacity of 1,170 people.

The building houses the Jewish Museum of History, which was established in 1992. The museum features exhibitions that document the heritage of the Jewish community and the history of the Holocaust. An interactive audio guide is available to provide information about the historical displays and the building's architectural features.

As a designated National Monument, the synagogue serves as a significant cultural and religious landmark. It remains a functioning place of worship and is open to the public for cultural experiences and historical expositions.
